Windows Vista, part 2

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Microsoft’s decision to release Window Vista for public testing could be seen as a brave move, or aWindows Vista 6.jpg very clever marketing ploy. Either way everyone wins; Microsoft gets a vast unpaid army of willing guinea pigs to root out the bugs and we get to try out the new operating system free for almost a year (the beta test version expires on June 1st 2007).

Of course there are also risks for both parties. If Microsoft has got it wrong and serious flaws emerge that further delay the commercial launch then Vista could be an almighty flop. Anyone signing up for the test should be aware that they use and install Vista Beta 2 entirely at their own risk. It should be kept well away from ‘mission critical’ PCs and irreplaceable data files. There’s also no guarantee that you will be able to upgrade from the Beta to the commercial release..

This week we’re going to look at how to sign up for the trial, obtain Vista Beta 2 and copy it to a blank DVD, but before you go any further make sure that you have a suitable PC with a DVD writer; see part 1 of this series for a summary of Vista’s system requirements.
