Windows Vista had its chance at success in 2004
Monday, August 7th, 2006
Yesterday, we talked about how delaying Windows Vista for another four to six weeks would not
necessarily be a bad thing. Actually, some of you even mentioned that the operating system should be delayed up to six months, which might seem like a long time. But how much would a six month delay hurt Vista’s success?
JupiterResearch contends that Microsoft already missed its opportunity to create a big bang with Vista back in 2004, which was the last time there was a major hardware upgrade cycle in the business world. Enterprises replace their hardware every three to five years, meaning that some companies may not be purchasing new equipment until 2009. That also means that the cycle could hit some companies in 2007, which would make a six month delay acceptable, placing the release date sometime around July 2007. Besides businesses, a July 2007 release date would also fit in with home consumers’ buying habits. If Microsoft invested in a major marketing push from July through December, many home consumers would upgrade their systems during the holiday season.
