Windows Vista Gamers Journal Part 1

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

You’ve probably already heard about Windows Vista, the next generation of Microsoft operating Windows Vista 11.jpgsystems that will replace Windows XP in 2007. A degree of infamy is associated with the new OS due to a long series of delays that have already forced Microsoft to postpone the consumer launch of the product past the all-important holiday season and into the first quarter of 2007. A much publicized voice-recognition demonstration foul-up got Microsoft publicly mocked a few weeks ago, and only yesterday Steve Jobs devoted some quality time in his keynote WWDC ‘06 address specifically calling out Microsoft for copying Mac innovations.

On the other hand, Jobs has been bitching that Microsoft copies Apple since the ’90s, and everyone knows that voice recognition rarely works anyway. Microsoft was apparently far too optimistic about how quickly it could tie together a brand new operating system, and missing the Q4 2006 launch looks bad. Happily, Microsoft is doing something particularly cool with the extra development time and is offering an open Beta program. Anyone so inclined is free to download the newest Beta build and start putting Vista to work.

…Let’s start from the ground up. Our Vista machine was built by VoodooPC in a slick black and red anodized chassis. The motherboard is an Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe (we’ll be testing Crossfire arrangements with Vista later this month.) An Athlon 64 FX-60 at 2.6GHz and an ATI Radeon X1900 (512MB) do the processing and are backed up by 2.0GB of ram. Drives include a Pioneer DVD-RW and a 150GB Western Digital 10,000 rpm HDD.
