Vista will not end spyware worries
Wednesday, September 13th, 2006
Vista: A distant view or prospect — a perfect description of Microsoft’s goal to thwart spyware,
worms and viruses with its next operating system, due in 2007.
It’s a distant goal and although Vista makes some progress, you can’t expect the company to take care of everything for you because its premise is built on two flaws:
• Internet Explorer is still integrated into the operating system.
• Users still run as administrators, a serious problem.
On Microsoft’s patch day last month, two of the critical updates were for Vista — an inauspicious beginning.
Apple’s OS X and Linux both handle the chore of being an administrator much more elegantly than Windows. And, it’s this one fact that makes both of them more secure than Windows.
It’s time for you, the user, to learn to swat spyware and worms yourself by using “Limited User” for your day-to-day computing.
More business computing is being done that way, even though there are problems.
Using a limited account requires discipline, but if you do it, many of your spyware and malware problems will go away. The State | 09/12/2006 | Vista won’t end spyware worries
