Vista takes another crack at viruses and bugs

Computer repairman Richard Clark remembers being frustrated once by a stubborn worm on a Windows Vista 19.jpgWindows PC when his customer — an auto mechanic — shared some words of wisdom that Clark quickly adapted into a mantra for his own business.

"I love computers, because they just keep breaking," Clark now says with a chuckle.

Microsoft hopes the new Windows will help change that. Windows Vista, due for retail release early next year, introduces a slate of new security precautions, along with an overhauled development process designed to reduce bugs that have made previous versions vulnerable.

Long term, the stakes are high for the company. Microsoft is trying to maintain the central role of its flagship PC operating system — the source of $10.2 billion in annual profits — in an industry where security is increasingly becoming a selling point.
