Vista Snubs Encrypted ZIPs
Saturday, March 3rd, 2007
A reader asked me to help find the password protection feature in Windows Vista’s built-in ZIP file
handling. Under XP you’d just choose File | Add a Password from the menu - easy! But I couldn’t find anything remotely like that in Vista. It does read password-protected ZIP files; it just won’t create them. I asked Microsoft about this apparent oversight and they replied that everything’s just fine, working as designed. "Users tended to overestimate the amount of security they were getting when they added a password", they told me.
So by removing this feature they were helping users "use more complete solutions"I find that explanation just a little hard to swallow. Since when has Microsoft refrained from releasing less powerful security solutions to "help" users by forcing them to choose a better solution? Vista Snubs Encrypted ZIPs - AppScout
