Vista gives parents control
Sunday, November 12th, 2006
Parental controls are new to Windows Vista but have been available with third-party programs like
Net Nanny. While not as feature-rich as some third party offerings, the Windows Vista parental controls can be applied to any standard user. Ideally when you, the parent, set up a computer running Vista, you would be the administrator and little Timmy would be just a standard user. The parental controls gives you far-reaching powers over what Timmy may and may not be able to do.
For instance, say Timmy is having some issues with school and you want to make sure he is not passing the time playing games instead of hitting the books. The parental controls will allow you to limit what times Timmy is allowed to log onto the computer. The controls can even give you activity reports so you can see if instead of working on his English report he is passing time surfing the web.
If you want to limit sites Timmy can visit on the Internet, you can do a block based on categories or just limit Timmy to specific sites of your choosing.
So what if it’s the weekend and Timmy has done all his homework and his grades are up and you feel it’s alright that he spend some time playing a few games?
You will want to block the mature-rated ones you or his older brother play. Parental controls will allow you to set the ratings for games Timmy is allowed to play - provided the game provides its rating to Windows Vista.
All in all, it should be a much-welcomed feature for parents (and loathed by the kids whose parents use it). BCNG Portals Page
