Vista and Games for Windows Update
Saturday, December 9th, 2006
Microsoft stopped by the office today to give us a quick update on the progress being made with
Windows Vista as well as chat a bit about the future of PC gaming and how they’re hoping to help advance its popularity with gamers. Most of what we were shown today were features that we’ve seen before. Still, it’s hard not to be happy with the Parental Controls system for all of Vista including web browsing, games, and timers for computer use. The games explorer still looks like a much more friendly place to find your games than it ever has been on Windows previously including standard storage for save games and the ability to load up a save game from the desktop. The Games Explorer will also include whatever descriptors publishers would like to include along with performance ratings which will hopefully give gamers a better clue how well the game will run on their PC.
One of the big pushes for Vista and gaming is the inclusion of the DirectX 10, which should add a lot of new options for developers when programming. While there aren’t a ton of games being released in 2007 for DirectX 10 (Vista is built on DirectX 9 architecture so DX9 games are still very much supported) the few that are could possibly be some pretty big titles. Games like Crysis, Hellgate: London, and Age of Conan will lead the charge into a new graphical horizon. We’ll get the chance to check out more of these titles running using DX10 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas in early January. IGN: Vista and Games for Windows Update
