Vista a Platform Shift, Not an Urgent Upgrade, for Most Shops
Thursday, June 15th, 2006
With Ed Bott, a leading Windows expert and blogger on all things Microsoft. Bott, who has been
running Windows Vista in beta for about 3 1/2 months, is wrapping up his book, "Windows Vista Inside Out," due from Microsoft Press at the same time Vista hits the shelves.
Question: From the perspective of the typical business user, what are some UI changes in Vista that might make it attractive for an aggressive upgrade? You’ve mentioned that the Start menu seems to be easier to use, and you also are encouraged by the higher visibility of the Backup feature to users. Are there other user-facing features to watch?
Bott: Those are both really good examples — the backup story is a particularly good one. I know most business people have a pretty heightened sense of the value of the data on their computer as a business asset, so having a built-in backup tool that works well is a good thing. The integrated search is probably, from the usability point of view, the single thing that’s going to make the biggest impact on people. You can add search to Windows XP right now. There are lots of really good products that do that: Copernic Desktop Search, X1, Google has their desktop search … For the particularly aggressive business user, it’s going to be, "Well, OK, that’s not such a big deal," but probably the integration into (Windows) Explorer is very helpful. For those that, for one reason or another, did not want to install a third-party search solution, this one will just be there and, getting past the usual beta bugs, should just work pretty seamlessly. The other thing that I would say is a gigantic improvement is wireless networking. … Both the interface and the performance of making a wireless connection have improved pretty dramatically in this upgrade. And you know wireless technology is huge, so that’s one people will get immediate benefit from. Bott: Vista a Platform Shift, Not an Urgent Upgrade, for Most Shops | IT Business Edge
