Vista a low end laptop breaker
Tuesday, June 27th, 2006
MOBILE workers, and that seems to include just about all of us these days, should find their
working lives at least a little easier, and perhaps more colourful, with Microsoft’s new Windows Vista operating system.
Be warned, however, that a quick glance suggests many road warriors will have to spring for new laptops if they want to take advantage of the spiffier new features.
They won’t be those less-than-$900 laptop cheapies flooding the market. Be prepared to shell out for machines with real grunt and solid battery life.
More on that in a moment. Vista is due for release to big-business users in November, and to the rest of us in the first quarter of 2007 - early in the quarter if all goes well, Microsoft sources say.
You can get an early taste of what’s in store, though. Last week, Microsoft made the beta 2 (test) version of Vista available for general use under its customer preview program. Previously betas have been reserved for software developers and other professional types. Australian IT - Vista a low-end laptop breaker (double click | David Frith, JUNE 27, 2006)
