Tweak your Vista

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Windows Vista spends ages when it first starts up ‘caching’ common files for quicker access later. If this thrashing of the hard disk is annoying you, there’s various things you can disable, but beware this may make programs launch more slowly. First of all, if you’re using a USB memory key for Readyboost, you may wish to disconnect it.

Readyboost uses flash memory as an extra cache and it can speed up systems equipped with less Ram. If your PC has 512MB or 1GB of Ram, Readyboost can deliver a real benefit, but if you have more than 1GB of Ram, it makes little or no difference. So if you have 2GB, don’t bother. Disabling Readyboost will also reduce the disk access at startup. T3 - Tweak your Vista
