Review: Windows Vista Build 5536
Sunday, August 27th, 2006
Windows Vista Build 5536 is a interim build released to preview RC1 changes coming. Here we’ll
take a small look at some of those changes.
Installation:
Doing a clean install on my Dell XPS 1710 Laptop took less than 30 minutes. This is far more impressive than the lagging install times seen with Windows Vista Beta 2. Although the last interim build, Build 5472, released to testers showed progress in the installation area - Build 5536 ultimately shows Microsoft lived up to its promise of cutting down installation time. Please note that doing any form of Upgrade from XP to this build or Vista Beta 2 to this build may take a bit longer.
First-Boot Experience:
After installation is complete, Microsoft now runs the Performance Rating Tool and configures your system for the best performance based off your hardware. As you wait for the system to configure itself based on the rating, Vista will display snippets of technologies that are included in the OS such as improved security, calendaring, and email. Some folks might be displeased with having to wait for this tool to complete but I think it is pretty good that Microsoft has been able to engineer the setup process to go in and detect how good my system is and configure it for the best performance. In XP, I always had to go set my screen resolution - now with Vista, I do not. It picks up the best screen resolution for my laptop.
All my drivers came up including my sound. I’m pretty happy about that. Review: Windows Vista Build 5536 at MSTechToday
