Inside Windows Vista, Build 5472
Thursday, July 20th, 2006
On Monday, Microsoft released another interim build of Windows Vista to a select group of beta
testers and MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) subscribers, and as usual, I’ve been putting it through its paces. Now that we’re past Beta 2 (read our preview), there’s not much that’s dramatically different in the latest builds, which are largely intended to help goad device driver and application developers to continue improving their Vista support. That said, in my experience so far, I’ve found the new build, 5472, feels snappier, more stable, and more polished than Beta 2, which definitely had rough spots. I’m also pleased to see some of the ways Microsoft is tweaking the UAC (User Account Control) experience to make it less intrusive.
When I first installed build 5472 on my test desktop system, it didn’t install audio drivers. But shortly after booting, I got a Windows Update alert indicating that appropriate audio drivers were available — and since then, I’ve had no hardware issues. I’ve also had good luck so far installing software. Though I haven’t yet loaded everything I’ll need to use my Vista machine as my everyday PC (which Microsoft doesn’t yet condone), I have yet to encounter any showstoppers.
