Gaming Post-Vista: Myths and Realities
Sunday, November 19th, 2006
With the PC primed to be the primary distribution platform for gaming categories (like MMORPGs in
particular) for many years to come, it’s important to know exactly what we’re getting into when Vista rolls out worldwide on January 30, 2007. While it’s a little early to see how “Live Anywhere” will affect the Massively Multiplayer Online part of MMORPG (if you’re familiar with XBox Live, “Live Anywhere” will be Microsoft’s attempt to draw the PC crowd into an already vibrant gaming community hub), I thought I would offer a quick, non-technical rebuttal to several of the more ambitious PC gaming rumors cropping up around the internet.
Myth #1 - Gamers must upgrade to Vista to play any PC games released post-Vista.
Myth #2 - Games will be developed exclusively for certain GPUs (Graphics Processing Units, or “Graphics Cards” as we used to say).
Myth #3 - DirectX 10 is not “backwards compatible,” and your current library of 3D games won’t work on Vista.
Reality #1 - DirectX 10 won’t be offered for Windows XP.
Reality #2 - Mx is still Mx. Ten Ton Hammer :: Life is a game! - Massively Multiplayer Online Game Info
