For PC Gamers, Microsofts Vista Is a Hot Rod Still in Low Gear

When a Microsoft public relations rep called last month, inviting me to a presentation about gamingWindows Vista 25.jpg on Vista, the new version of Windows that the company plans to introduce early next year, I initially thought it would be a waste of time.

“What’s the point?” I asked. “Vista isn’t coming out until 2007. So I’m going to sit through some canned demonstrations of stuff that will all change in the next six months anyway. It’s not like you’re going to let me walk out with a test copy of Vista to really put it through its paces.”

I was wrong; it was not a waste of time. And walking out with a test, or beta, copy of Vista is exactly what the company let me do. It even shipped me a screamer of a PC (by VoodooPC, the Lamborghini of computer makers) to use to evaluate how top video games perform under the new operating system.

After a couple of weeks with the machine, my impression is that Vista will be a solid step forward for gaming, and that it will keep PC gaming relevant in the face of new consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 3. But Microsoft has some critical work to do before the system is ready for gaming’s prime time. For PC Gamers, Microsoft’s Vista Is a Hot Rod Still in Low Gear - New York Times
