Vista Upgrade Edition is lame by design

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Arstechnica is reporting that Windows Vista Upgrade edition will not permit "clean" installs like all previous versions of Windows Upgrade editions. This is another one of those "what were you thinking" moments for Microsoft management similar to their bone headed decision to lock the retail version of Vista to one hardware migration.

Running Vista on a Mac

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Microsoft’s Vista hits store shelves on Tuesday and although it’s got a kicking in the press, there’s one group that actually seems quite excited about it — Mac users. At Macworld, the most crowded booths belonged to Parallels Inc. and VMWare, two software companies that help run Windows a Mac. It was quite remarkable: both [...]

Vista: Changing the World One PC at a Time

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

As Vista launches, I’m in New York thinking back to 1995 when I was attending the Windows 95 launch and imagining what could have been. Given the size of this launch, this week I’m just going to focus on Vista and think through the impact it will have as it rolls into the market over [...]

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

New Windows OS launches don’t happen all that often, but when they do the upgrade is usually a pretty exciting time, even if all you really want is for the computer you use 16-hours a day to look and feel a little different for the first time in 5-years. Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Internal Microsoft e-mail messages from 2004 reveal that company evangelists and executives were awed by Apple’s just-added desktop search and acknowledged that what they did in Windows Vista would be directly compared with Mac OS X. The messages, which were filed as evidence in an Iowa state court trying a Microsoft antitrust case, were between [...]

Sights and Sounds from the Windows Vista Launch Event in NYC

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Bill Gates and the gang officially launched Windows Vista at an event in Times Square New York this evening. Following are some of the sights and sounds of that event. Instead of having Rolling Stones kick off the launch event with “Start it Up” like they did with Windows XP, it was a lesser known [...]

Vista: Where are the killer apps?

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

If you’ve seen any Windows Vista demos over the past year, you’ve probably seen Microsoft show off a handful of Vista-customized applications, like The New York Times Reader, North Face’s kiosk application, and iBloks’ multimedia-sharing wares. But where are the rest of the Vista killer apps — the ones that will convince users that they [...]

No More Clean Installs Using Upgrade Discs With Windows Vista

Monday, January 29th, 2007

When it comes to the Windows Vista, Microsoft is changing a long-standing tradition when it comes to upgrading from a previous version of Windows.
