A look at the different roads to Windows Vista

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

Yesterday afternoon, Microsoft released details about the different upgrade possibilities for users Windows Vista 11.jpgwishing to move from their current Windows operating systems (OS) to Windows Vista. While Windows XP Home users have an easy upgrade path, Windows 2000 users aren’t so lucky. Luckily, anyone running Windows 2000 or Windows XP can save a fistful of money by purchasing an upgrade copy of Vista which is cheaper than a full installation copy of the same system.

Two different Windows Vista upgrade options are given to Windows XP and Windows 2000 users, both of which should be familiar to anyone who has had to upgrade in the past. The first option is simpler, and it is an in-place upgrade which retains all previous applications, settings, and files—the catch being that not everything is guaranteed to work. The second option requires a clean install, which is basically a slash and burn of the current OS. In a clean install, a user should back up their files because the upgrade will remove everything. While anyone can venture down the wipe and install path, the in-place installation is contingent upon the current setup. M-Dollar: A look at the different roads to Windows Vista
